Pedestrian homicides continue to plague Gainesville
By Francis Kapper
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A woman walking her dog last night and a child crossing to a playground this morning were victims in two deadly pedestrian accidents in Alachua County.
The cases add to a string of pedestrian deaths that have become a major focus.
Some deaths were hit-and-runs, including one last weekend, but not in these two cases.
In the city of Alachua, a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit a 5-year-old boy just after 7 a.m.
It happened at a crosswalk on Hipp Way that links a neighborhood to a park.
There was a light-up crosswalk sign, but the lights were not working Friday and bystanders said it was foggy.
The highways patrol said everyone needs to stay aware there could be all kinds of traffic around, people on foot, on bikes or scooters, or in a larger vehicles.
