Meet the 6 convicts executed by Florida in 2023 #shorts
The last person executed by the state of Florida in 2023 was…
Duane Michael Zack III
Zack, 54, met with Ann-Kristin, his first wife. October 3 at 6:14 p.m., he was executed via lethal injection after declining a final meal and consulting with his spiritual advisor.
The 54-year-old was initially sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Laura Rosillo in Okaloosa County, but he was later given the death penalty for the rape and murder of 31-year-old Ravonne Smith in Escambia County in 1996. Official sentencing to death occurred on November 24, 1997, and the death warrant was executed by DeSantis on August 17.
He picked Rosillo up at a bar and drove her to the beach to use drugs. Then, according to court papers, he hit her, raped her, and left her there half-naked. He met his second victim, Ravonne Smith, in a bar as well. Court papers show that he beat her, sexually assaulted her, and stabbed her after breaking into her home. The two crimes happened within nine days of each other.
He challenged his life sentence to the Florida Supreme Court, claiming intellectual disability as a result of fetal alcohol syndrome, low cognitive abilities, and PTSD. His appeal was rejected by the court.
In conclusion, the issue of the death penalty in Florida is a complex and deeply debated topic.
Whether one advocates for its abolition or supports its continued use, it is crucial to engage in informed discussions.
