Florida town rounds up swans for annual health check up
The city of Lakeland, Florida held their 43rd annual swan roundup at Lake Morton on Tuesday. City employees took to the lake in boats to capture the population of 50 swans so they could be given wellness exams through My Pet’s Animal Hospital, which has donated their services.
The lake’s current swan population started in 1957, when a mated pair of swans was donated to the city by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
Today, the city budgets about $10,000 each year to care for and feed the swans, which have become emblematic of Lakeland. Images and statues of swans can be seen throughout the town.
